JOHANNESBURG - The timing of the Sunday Times's story about Jacob Zuma's love child is interesting. It looks as though it was designed to cause maximum damage to the president and to the country. By all accounts President Zuma had acquitted himself rather well last week at the annual Davos talk shop for the movers and shakers of the financial and the political world (for all the action click here and here for interviews). JOHANNESBURG - There is a famous saying among lawyers in the US....."where there's blame there's a claim". And where there's a successful claim there's usually a very fat legal fee that goes with it. Which probably helps explain the peculiar case against companies like IBM, Daimler Chrysler and General Motors who allegedly supported apartheid in this country and must now be made to pay reparation to those that suffered. The case is particularly strange in that it is being brought under the Alien Tort Claims Act in a US court. The Act allows non US citizens to bring civil claims against companies trading in the US. JOHANNESBURG - In less enlightened times there were a couple of ways you could end up with more money in your lifetime than you could conceivably hope to spend. Obviously if you were a member of the landed gentry you could inherit the stately pile, a vast art collection and a large shareholding in the family business (now an international company) and live happily ever after pursuing your hobby of growing prize orchids. Not for you the daily grind of turning up at an office and waiting eagerly for the monthly pay cheque.
