JOHANNESBURG - The term "right wing" has all sorts of dreadful associations in South Africa. It conjures up images of bearded men in tight khaki shorts getting into their battered old Mercs to go and fight for Lucas Mangope, that exemplary African leader so beloved of his people. Or men with blowtorch eyes who whip crowds up to a frenzy with their fiery rhetoric and then fall off horses. Or groups of white Julius Malemas in boy scout uniforms guarding their leaders. The thieving politicians in the UK have always been on the make but they try to do it in ways that they hope will not attract attention. They fiddle their expenses and then look all wide eyed and innocent when they're caught claiming for a house they no longer own or charging the taxpayer for dredging the moat around the family pile. Just as movie stars have access to vast amounts of money to indulge their every whim, so do politicians. The difference is that Hollywood stars have talent and, arguably, earn their money while most politicians have very little talent and therefore having to resort to stealing money meant for other thing...
