I spent last Tuesday evening learning how to trim a piece of beef fillet of fat and membrane and how to cut it into 200gm and 300gm steaks. The venue was meat.etc at The Firs in Rosebank, just opposite Katzy's and The Grillhouse. In fact meat.etc is the latest addition to the Grillhouse and Katzy's success formula. So now you can have a steak and a bottle of good wine in The Grillhouse, move next door for a cigar and a whisky (plus some live music of course) before dropping into meat.etc to pick up some steak, a set of knives, spice and whatever else you need to do to replicate the Grillhouse experience at home. It'll never be quite the same but there's no harm trying.

JOHANNESBURG - Have you ever heard the term "Veblen goods"? Probably not and I hadn't either until I picked up the Weekend FT recently. Named after the economist Thorstein Veblen, who wrote a paper about conspicuous consumption as long ago as 1899 (The Theory of the Leisure Class), "Veblen goods" refer to goods or services which are apparently price insensitive. The best example is designer handbags. If a handbag is a must have item then it doesn't matter what it costs. If the price goes up then the handbag becomes even more desirable. If more were produced and the price were to be marked down or discounted then customers would lose interest. Veblen goods don't respond to the laws of economics. I know exactly what's going to happen. One of our loyal readers will post a comment and get all hoity toity. "I thought this was a financial website....what's this car review doing here?" Now I don't wish to be judgmental but I would respectfully suggest that the sort of person anal enough to get worked up about a car review occasionally appearing on the Moneyweb page is probably the sort of person who only has sex in the missionary position and infrequently at that. So, as the Metropolitan Police used to say when I was a lad, "move along there please" if you find a car review (for want of a better description) offensive on this page. For those of you with more adventurous appetites...read on.
