GAUTENG – Commuters using the Gautrain in off-peak times will enjoy discounts of up to 30% from the peak “red” fare as of June 1, the Gautrain Management Agency announced on Friday.
Introducing a multi-tiered fare structure, the Gautrain has categorised travel times into red, green and orange on the pay-as-you-go single train trips.
The red fare is the standard fee applied between 06h30 and 07h30 on weekdays in the peak demand directions: south-bound and west-bound.
The orange fare is applied between 06h00 and 08h30 (unless a red fare applies) or between 15h30 and 18h00 on weekdays and all day on weekends and public holidays.
The green fare is applied when you tag into the relevant fare gate before 06h00, between 08h30 and 15h30 and after 18h00 on any weekday.
Announcing the revised fares today, operations executive in the Bombela Concession Company, Errol Braithwaite, said this was aimed at improving the overall utilisation level of the integrated rail and bus service.
Braithwaite said that the increase in the off-peak discount was part of an ongoing strategy to grow overall patronage by incentivising off-peak travel.
