Foreign investors snap up Mondi shares

But reduce stakes in MMI and Sasol.

Foreign investors piled into Mondi and Redefine Properties shares during September, but disinvested from MMI Holdings and Sasol.

This is evident from detailed shareholding analyses – by financial data provider TimBukOne – of changes in the companies’ dematerialised shareholder registers between August 28 and September 25. These dematerialised shareholder registers, reflecting the nationality of the shareholders and the changes in geographical ownership, make for very interesting reading.

Popular companies

The analyses show the net change of foreign ownership during the period for the top 40 shares listed on the JSE.

Mondi was the most popular company with more than 6 million shares moving to foreign owners, representing slightly more than 5.15% of the company’s issued shares. The TimBukOne analyses also show that US and UK investors acquired the majority of these Mondi shares.

Property groups Redefine and Growthpoint were also very popular and saw a net of 4.13% and 2% of their shares move to foreign owners. It was again US and UK investors who were the most prolific buyers of these shares.

Disinvestment

On the other side of the spectrum MMI, Sasol and Mr Price saw foreign shareholders selling noteworthy stakes of their holdings.

Foreigners, most notably in the US, Namibia and Switzerland, sold a net of 90 million MMI shares in the insurance giant. This represents nearly 5.7% of the issued share capital, which has increased the South African holding of these counters.

Sasol (3.5%) and Mr Price (2.95%) also saw foreigners disinvesting from their shares.
