Simon’s weekly wrap: Great expectations

This week MoneywebNOW looked at inflation expectations leading to real inflation, Combined Motor Holdings’ margins and the car hire outlook, the investment case for listed residential property, and Renergen’s helium token launch.

Inflation locally and in the US is proving stubborn: it refuses to be transitory as promised by the Federal Reserve. I spoke with Adrian Saville of Genera Capital on how inflation expectations lead to real inflation. I also asked if he believed the transitory talk and what we can expect to see in a year.

Vehicle manufacturers are cutting production due to chip shortages, but Combined Motor Holdings just had its best results ever. I spoke with CEO Jebb McIntosh about increasing margins, vehicle shortages and importantly how car hire is doing? He cautioned that it expects shortages of cars available for hire over the holidays. So, book early.

We all know how tough it has been for some sectors of the listed property space, namely office and to a lesser degree retail. But how has residential property held up and what’s the investment case? I spoke with Transcend Property Fund CEO Myles Kritzinger about the sector and the company.

Renergen* has launched a helium token in an attempt to get proper price discovery. Much like iron ore of the early 2000s all trade is contract based, but Pallinghurst co-founder Brian Gilbertson forced buyers into buying via exchange and it did wonders for the iron ore price. Renergen CEO Stefano Marani is hoping to do the same with helium and I spoke with him about the details.

Also this week:

Strong Clicks results, but high valuations, Umthombo Wealth’s Alex Duys on company news; and Simon Brown on the new Satrix All Share ETF.
