Simon’s weekly wrap: Strong results, a new entity and inflation dangers

This week MoneywebNOW looked at the 10X/CoreShares deal, the impacts of food inflation, results from Afrimat and Astral Foods as well as flat-fee retirement investing.

The announcement that 10X Investment was buying the local ETF provider CoreShares, raised a lot of questions from clients. I spoke with CoreShares MD Gareth Stobie and he assured me that the product line would remain. In time the branding will change, and fees may even come down a little as the combined entity will have better scale and clients should benefit from this. (Read transcript)

I spoke with Thalia Petousis of Allan Gray about inflation, specifically food inflation. She points out that food inflation has been a political tipping point many times over the years, but solving it is not that easy. We’re also seeing second-order impacts as bond yields move higher and of course higher interest rates. (Read transcript)

Afrimat is a decidedly different company from what it was when it listed in 2006 and I spoke to CEO Andries van Heerden about its recent annual results. It has become a bulk commodity miner, but it continues to keep things simple, buying quality assets it can manage more efficiently and hence make strong profits from. (Read transcript)

Astral Foods had strong interim results, but off the low base of the previous lockdown period. CEO Chris Schutte mentioned that volumes were ahead of pandemic levels in part due to demand, but also due to better production. Of concern remains the maize price which at record levels is some 70% of the cost of producing a kilogram of chicken. (Read transcript)
