Are IPPs getting unnecessary flak over Eskom?

Association says IPPs being blamed unfairly for Eskom’s troubles.

Cosatu and other unions have called for government to suspend contracts with independent power producers. The union says the existing contracts are crippling the power utility and are only benefiting a few individuals. 

Thomas Garner, chairperson of the South African Independent Power Producers Association, says had it not been for IPPs, last week’s load shedding could have been worse and that we could have had a blackout. He says the unbundling of Eskom could have happened a long time ago.
