Banks up security as M2 closures results in crime surge

Attempted hijacking, smash and grabs have increased as commuters are stuck in traffic.

Following the closure of parts of the M2 highway in Johannesburg earlier this year, there has also been a surge in crimes within the central business district near the closures. As a result of the traffic and congestion that the closure caused, corporate workers, including bank staff, have fallen victim to opportunistic crimes. Phumza Macanda, a spokesperson at Absa speaks to Nompu Siziba about the strategy that big banks, including Absa, FNB and Standard Bank are now implementing to curb these crimes.
