Cannabis and life insurance: What you need to know

How will life insurers assess claims if the use of cannabis is disclosed during the application process?

Following South Africa’s recent decriminalisation of the private use and cultivation of cannabis, many industries will need to reassess existing business practices which may be affected by the changing legislation. However, at an individual level, despite the legalisation of private use, this does not mean that an insurance company will look kindly on this conduct.

Ahead of weed day, to be celebrated on the 20th April, Nompu Siziba speaks with Jonathan Elcock, the founder and CEO of CompariSure to share some tips on how the insurance industry views the consumption of cannabis. Dr Andrew Hutchison an associate professor, at the University of Cape Town’s Department of Commercial Law, also weighs in on the discussion.
