Koko’s version of events slammed at Zondo commission

Eskom chairman Jabu Mabuza relays developments since taking the helm.

Eskom chairman Jabu Mabuza testified at the Zondo commission of inquiry into state capture on Monday that former executive Matshela Koko sent confidential documents showing existing business opportunities within the power utility to Gupta associates.

Former chief financial officer, Anoj Singh, and former chairman, Ben Ngubane, are also alleged to have leaked confidential information to help advance the business interests of the infamous Gupta brothers.
Koko resigned from Eskom in 2018 after he was charged with leaking sensitive information to Gupta associates and lying to parliament about payments to Trillian and McKinsey. He resigned before he was due to appear before a disciplinary hearing.

Sikonathi Mantshantsha, deputy editor at the Financial Mail, breaks down the latest developments on the Classic Business Breakfast with Moneyweb.

How soon will these Gupta connected characters actually be charged and brought before the “special court”?

Before the election? Errrr …. doubtful …. so after the election? Errrr …. doubtful.

Referring to Koko, when he was served with charges in early 2018 he responded as follows: ” “I welcome these developments and once again look forward to clearing my name in a tribunal.”. Shortly thereafter, and before his disciplinary hearing, he suffered what can only be called a serious and sudden change of heart. He decided to resign from Eskom with immediate effect. So no handover, no gradual implementation of succession planning, and no other reasons that overpaid executives employ to delay their departure.

He cut and ran. He *never* made use of the opportunity of clear his name. It says a lot.

End of comments.
