New opportunities arising in SA’s listed property sector

There is still value for listed property relative to bonds, despite a tough market.

The JSE-listed South African property sector has had a rough time, with 2018 notably a particularly poor performing year as investors got jittery about a number of property counters, which had a contagion effect on others.

Aside from that, the dynamics of the property sector on the ground have been done, reflecting a poorer macro-economic environment that these companies operate in. Despite the challenges, though, is there still value to be had in investing in some real estate investment trusts? Richard Colburn,  an equity analyst at Sanlam Private Wealth discusses why the South African property index declined by 20% in 2018 and what property companies need to be doing to stay ahead of the curve.
