Retail sales show signs of improvement but economy remains fragile

Clothing, footwear, pharmaceuticals and household furniture record the largest increases.

Statistics South Africa’s latest data for April showed that retail sales improved by 2.4% compared to the same period last year. This is seen as a good start to the second quarter, with manufacturing output also improving. If the numbers are sustained, it could keep the country from further growth contractions, avoiding a recession. Tsitsi Hatendi-Matika, the head of retail investment at Absa, unpacks the latest figures with Nompu Siziba.
