Unemployment eases marginally to 27.1% in Q4 2018

Finance and other business services sector record largest gain.

The unemployment rate fell to 27.1% in the fourth quarter of 2018, from 27.5% in the previous quarter.

The labour force grew by 0.3% quarter on quarter (q/q) to 22.67 million, lagging the 0.9% q/q lift in the number of individuals employed during the period, thereby rendering a lower unemployment rate in the same quarter.

Lara Hodes, economist at Investec, says this isn’t sufficient enough to drive any notable change. She talks to Classic Business Breakfast with Moneyweb about the factors and sectors that contributed to this change.
