ConCourt backs extension of vote-candidate registration

The judgment enables the ANC to field candidates in all of the nation’s wards, after it failed to register candidates for at least 35 municipalities by a previous deadline.

The Constitutional Court backed the electoral authority’s decision to allow political parties more time to register candidates for municipal elections.

The judgment enables the ruling African National Congress to field candidates in all of the nation’s wards, after it failed to register candidates for at least 35 municipalities by a previous deadline. Opposition parties including the Democratic Alliance and the Inkatha Freedom Party had opposed the registration extension.

“The Constitutional Court held that the decision of the electoral commission to re-open the candidate nomination process for the 2021 municipal elections, in terms of this court’s order issued on September 3, is not unconstitutional, unlawful and invalid,” the court said in a statement on its Twitter account Monday.

Municipal elections will take place on November 1, after the Constitutional Court previously dismissed an application by the Independent Electoral Commission to postpone the vote until next year, citing the impact that coronavirus restrictions would have on the authority’s ability to conduct a free and fair vote.

Did anyone really think this wasn’t going to go the ANC’s way.

The deadlines were known to all constituents beforehand, it was not a surprise, it was not moved several times, and it was set months in advance. Rewarding people for not doing their job is in line with government policy, so nobody should be surprised by this ruling.

Yes this disease permeates many organizations. Try dealing with many a help desk using e-mail. The query has a reference number. Usually the mail trail is deleted and each mail is dealt with by a different person. They specialize in non-accountability. This allows them to hire untrained and lowly paid employees.

The ANC have weakened every institution we have, including the Constitutional Court.

This is plainly un-democratic and just panders to the ANC.

This was a bad biased judgment.
The ANC didn’t register candidates because they arrogantly thought the election would be postponed until next year.

The final bastion crumbles (but, shockingly, I am not surprised). When the ANC withdrew their court application it was clear for all to see that they had prior knowledge of what was to come and they could save more of the money they do not have. The ruling party has become arrogant in its indolence, full of pompous, deployed functionaries, and this was a moment in time that they could have been taught a lesson. Now we will never know. Ah well, another 50 years of incompetent, bankrupt municipalities.

End of comments.
