The South African government is seeking to cut 30 000 state jobs and freeze pay increases for three years, according to the Congress of South African Trade Unions.

That’s part of the state’s proposal to reduce its wage bill, which makes up 35.4% of national spending. President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Thursday his administration is engaging with labour and other stakeholders on measures to contain the spending on salaries and reduce wastage. There are about 1.3 million government workers.

Finance Minister Tito Mboweni would announce plans to reduce spending in the February 26 budget, Ramaphosa said.

“We’re not going to entertain those” proposals, said Sizwe Pamla, the spokesman for Cosatu, the country’s biggest labour federation. “Government has a right to engage with its employees but government doesn’t have the right to its own slaves.”

Yes Cosatu, that’s terrible of Government…not very Communist (we all fall /fail together), ne?
Perhaps Sizwe would like to embellish upon the slaves comment, though…

They should cut at least 300 000.

Between CR and Sizwe we really have a winning combination running the country.

What mentality is this then?

Worst part is, we lose 30 000 public “servants” and nobody will even notice a reduction in the productivity, its zero anyways

Cosatu did not complain that the 30 000 were artificial jobs to start with.

Neither did Cosatu complain about all the government officials and army and police generals that earn million rand salaries.

Good point, why did government even make mention that they will be cutting 30 000, they should just stop the fictitious wages to the over 100 000.

The ANC cadres have just been hiring their family and friends in government to sit and do nothing but collect a wage. This is sapping the countries fiscus fast and finally pow, nothing left.

End of comments.
