NUM may seek to double wages for lowest paid members

In upcoming wage talks for the gold, coal and diamond sectors.

South Africa’s National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) may seek pay hikes of up to 100% for its lowest paid members in upcoming wage talks in the gold, coal and diamond sectors, its General Secretary said on Thursday.

Frans Baleni also told reporters on the sidelines of a conference called by NUM to draft its 2015 wage demands that he was hoping wage talks in the gold sector would begin in late April or early May.
