Numsa union demands 15% wage hike in coal sector

Union says it is pushing for an increase of 20% in all allowances.

The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) has demanded Glencore raise coal mining wages by 15%, Numsa said on Tuesday, almost triple the inflation rate of 4.6%.

Numsa also said it was pushing for an increase of 20% in all allowances. The union is scheduled to meet with the Chamber of Mines on Tuesday to discuss wages.

Well if I was management of Glencore and others then I would want to see hard evidence and justification for these ridiculous requests, tell them to go away and come back with a realistic request more attuned to CPI. These consistent demands for above inflation increases, keeps inflation artificially high. Are these negotiators on behalf of the unions so thick that they can’t see that in the next few years they won’t have members they will be out of jobs as companies mechanise
