Rio Tinto Group is resuming operations at its South African mine that was shuttered earlier this month because of escalating violence in surrounding communities.

The Richards Bay Minerals unit should be back at full operations in early January, leading to regular production in early 2020, Rio said in a statement Monday. The decision was taken after discussions led by the Premier of the KwaZulu-Natal province, aimed at securing stability.

RBM employs about 5 000 staff and contractors, and exports titanium dioxide slag, used to create ingredients for products including paint, plastics, sunscreen and toothpaste.

Rio said December 4 it halted mining operations and temporarily suspended a $463 million expansion project following weeks of protests around the area where the mine is located and after an employee was shot and injured. The demonstrations weren’t related to the company, it said at the time.

The company will review the restart of the Zulti South project after operations normalise.

The Rio team will need to grow some balls, this is the tip of the ice-berg of what is going on in so many communities. I hope they and many others with corporate muscle push the government to take the steps needed to get on top of community unrest and criminal activities. Can someone send the CEO of RIO a bullet proof vest for his trips to SA and a bag of nappies!

Their land will soon be expropriated “Without compensation” by the Zulu king when he takes KZN out of South Africa. The government right from the top has lied to him and have been doing so all along.

I for one say go for it. Go independent This ANC lot is destroying everything they touch. Let KZN not be destroyed with the rest.

The King needs to step in now and rescue the situation.

And while the king is at it he can earn his own money as well. We\are sick and tired of maintaining all the various kings. Blerry parasites.

End of comments.
