SA concerned about mining job cuts – mines minister

Zwane will work with industry stakeholders to look at options to avoid them.

CAPE TOWN – South Africa is concerned about planned job cuts in the mining industry and will work with industry stakeholders to look at options to avoid them, its mineral resources minister said on Friday.

“Retrenchments are to be taken only as a last resort, after all other options outlined in the declaration have been exhausted,” Minister Mosebenzi Zwane said in a statement after a meeting with Sibanye Gold’s chief executive Neal Froneman.

“We continue to urge all stakeholders to be more responsible in how these planned retrenchments are announced, as they impact on thousands of lives and livelihoods.”
