Sandton Mall raises security post bomb threat

‘Additional security, emergency services’ and police are on site.

Sandton City in Johannesburg, Africa’s largest shopping center, heightened security after receiving a bomb threat.

“As part of the heightened security alert, additional security, emergency services” and police are on site, Nomzamo Radebe, chief executive officer of JHI Retail for Sandton City, said in an e-mailed statement. “The center will continue trading as normal.”

The mall, in South Africa’s chief financial district, is located next to the US consulate, which last month said extremists may be targeting American government and business interests in the country.

“The bomb threat was made against Mandela Square itself,” said Wayne Minaar, a spokesman for Johannesburg Metropolitan Police, referring to the open-air square that forms part of the mall. “JMPD is going there to, if necessary, block off roads and assist with traffic and pedestrian flow.”

The center is now operating normally, Julie Hillary, JHI Retail’s general manager for the Sandton region, said by phone. “One tenant chose to evacuate because it didn’t want to take on any risk,” she said, without giving any further details because an investigation is ongoing.
