Vavi considers appeal

Following his expulsion from Cosatu.
Zwelinzima Vavi, the former general secretary of the Congress of South African Trade Unions, says he’s in talks about challenging his “extremely irregular, illegal and completely unjustified expulsion” from the labor federation.

“My rights to a fair process have been denied and prejudiced,” Vavi told reporters in Johannesburg. “I remain fully convinced that I did nothing wrong, let alone break the law in the execution of my duties.”

Cosatu on Tuesday expelled Vavi for gross misconduct in a move that may split the nation’s biggest labor federation and ally of the ruling African National Congress.

Cosatu’s special congress in July won’t be attended by seven affiliate unions that support the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa, Vavi said.

The labor federation expelled Numsa, its biggest affiliate, after it refused to support the ANC in elections last year.
