Armitage’s Astoria is the most popular pick for 2016

Take a look at the Moneyweb community’s stock picks for the year.

JOHANNESBURG – The most popular stock pick for 2016 is Astoria, an AltX-listed company with focus on offshore investments. The choice confirms Peter Armitage’s status as one of the country’s favourite fund managers. Astoria is managed by Armitage’s Anchor Capital, a division of JSE-listed Anchor Group.

Last year, it was Anchor Capital that was the most popular choice (see: Anchor Group is the most popular stock pick). Popularity is no guarantee of good results, but the stock increased 92% last year. The performance of all of last year’s picks can be viewed here.

The competition offers the Moneyweb community a chance to show off their stock-picking skills (and luck). It is an informal competition, with no prizes other than bragging rights. At the beginning of the year, each entrant chooses one JSE-listed company. The best performer for the year wins. Entries for the competition are now closed.

here we go again – buying rand hedges – WHY? why pay people to manage your money when you can do it yourself. speak to magnus heystek – if you need help – otherwise 30 yr us treasury bond yielding 2.8% PLUS the devaluation of the rand. over last 12 months – a south African investor would have earned 50%. why is this not discussed by planners? BECAUSE PLANNERS DONT GET COMMISSIONS!

Dear Robert – Why don’t you just concern yourself with your own country? Clearly you have no clue about tax – Foreign interest is taxed at your marginal rate (max 41%) – The US has withholding taxes – So then you have to appoint at tax adviser to claim your tax credits and have a US bank account for any credits (depending on te tax treaty) – Far better to hold a stable offshore share with high dividend yield (div tax 15%) – Rand hedges are not that bad – They are part of an diversified investment strategy – BY the way most 1st world stock markets have lost money in the the last 1-3 years. But of course you have all the answers.

One has to take and every piece of advice with a pinch of salt. Invariably those touting any products have a vested interest in those products being traded on, whether that be individual investments or the country as a whole. Those with a global perspective can certainly see no value in anything remotely associated with ZAR, but then their livelihood isn’t dependent on its inevitable demise and replacement by the Yuan…

Moneyweb Investor Issue 25

If the world's best investment managers, who came together at a recent CFA conference, cannot figure whether a crash or correction is looming, ordinary investors can be forgiven for their hesitation. Thus the June issue of The Moneyweb Investor does its best to fill the gaps. With 17 stories and a podcast, you wouldn't want to miss it.
