Moneyweb partners with Grindstone entrepreneurs

Can we identify the next big thing in technology?

JSE-listed media group Moneyweb has joined forces with technology investor Knife Capital to try and identify high-impact entrepreneurs capable of developing world-class businesses with the potential to go global.

Knife Capital is a subsidiary of JSE-listed African Dawn Capital which operates the Grindstone entrepreneur initiative.

Last year, the interventions of the year-long Grindstone programme enabled ten companies to increase revenue by 61% on average from a solid growth platform and enhance funding readiness to close investment opportunities. Computer vision and radar company iKubu achieved the best growth metrics and was recently acquired by Nasdaq-listed Garmin.

“Through the Grindstone programme we were really inspired to take the business to the next level. Knife Capital forced us to ask ourselves some difficult questions about our business and to make key strategic choices in 2014,” says Franz Struwig, co-founder of iKubu.

“Moneyweb is a business with entrepreneurial roots and we want to be at the forefront of identifying high-impact entrepreneurs in the technology and media sectors in particular and be able to support them through both exposure and potential direct investment down the line,” says Moneyweb MD Marc Ashton.

Moneyweb will provide the entrepreneurs with a platform through which to share their learnings as well as advertising exposure. Keep your eyes on Moneyweb.co.za to hear their stories.

The 13 Grindstone companies are:

  • Cognadev – Innovative assessment and people development techniques to identify and leverage talent.
  • Comunity – Mobile services platform delivering rich applications.
  • Electrum Payments – Customised banking and payment system software.
  • Mobinomics – Creating integrated software-intensive operating systems for telco’s, cities and organisations.
  • MPULL – Scalable B2B marketing and lead generation agency creating well-oiled revenue marketing machines.

Grindstone draws on various speakers, mentors and corporates to assist in supporting these high-growth SMEs. “We were overwhelmed by the interest and deep interventions from leading South African corporates,” says Andrea Bӧhmert from Knife Capital.

This year Grindstone is partnering with corporates with entrepreneurial flair like FNB, Microsoft BizSpark, ENS Africa, Moneyweb, M&C Saatchi Abel, Ansarada Data Rooms and PwC to link into and bolster Enterprise Development initiatives.
