South Africa’s supermarket chain Pick n Pay said on Tuesday it had concluded an agreement to buy on-demand online grocery delivery firm Bottles to strengthen its e-commerce business.

The acquisition of Bottles, which has partnered with Pick n Pay since 2018 delivering alcohol to shoppers and now groceries, is expected to be completed by November this year, the retailer said without giving the value of the deal.

In a statement on its interim results for the six months ended August 30, 2020 the group said in response to the surge in demand for online shopping during the initial lockdown, Pick n Pay Online launched an on-demand app via partnership with Bottles, “converting it from an online liquor platform into a grocery app in just four days.”

It added that Bottles is the highest-rated mobile app in its category, ahead of any other online grocery delivery service in South Africa.
