Cell C hi-jacks Mmusi Maimane with hilarious radio ad

On 13 May Politician Mmusi Maimane launched a twitter campaign – he would answer all tweets with the #AskMmusi hashtag.  Some citizens took it seriously. But their tweets were soon followed by thousands of silly chirps. When he started trending, Mmusi stopped replying. So Cell C ran this radio ad: (Click here to listen)

Finally. TV advertisers wake up to what a real S.A. family looks like…

The dictionary definition of family is ‘a group consisting of two parents and their children living together as a unit’. Yup, that’s a little outdated to say the least. In fact, today’s dynamics are far more complicated and – in a world where hyper relevance trumps all – marketers have to take note and act. Would you drink beer at this establishment, just because the M.D. of Moneyweb does?

Marc Ashton, MD of Moneyweb has a bee in his bonnet about ‘Influencer Marketing’ In South Africa. He firmly believes that marketers need to be wary of jumping boots and all into the idea of ‘influencer marketing’, because they will be disappointed. In his words:

“In theory, the practice of using an influencer to endorse your product, which should ultimately drive sales, makes sense. The problem that we have in South Africa is that a lot of the so-called ‘influencers’ are not quite as influential as we like to think and marketers are lead to believe that social media followings actually can impact sales.

Let me start with an outrageous example to perhaps highlight the flaw in the thinking:

– I like drinking beer at Giles in Parkhurst.”
