President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to announce tighter Covid-19 restrictions later tonight to combat the rapid spreading of the deadly virus.
Ramaphosa is anticipated to put some restrictions on the sale of alcohol and limits on the size of gatherings.
This expected move by the government is part of its efforts to stem the spread of the virus, which has increased to about 8 000 infections a day.
The National Liquor Traders Council says it is aware of the talk about further restrictions on the sale of alcohol and has warned that thousands of township households will be impacted financially if it goes ahead.
If a booze ban goes ahead, it will likely see sales restricted to four days a week, as seen when restrictions were tightened in the past.
The president is addressing the nation following him convening a meeting of the National Coronavirus Command Council on Tuesday.
South Africa is currently on Alert Level two of the national lockdown.
