SA regulator to discuss J&J shot after US pause

Will meet Wednesday.

South African health authorities and scientists will meet Wednesday to discuss the US decision to suspend use of Johnson & Johnson’s Covid-19 vaccine after it was linked to rare blood clots.

The Ministerial Advisory Committee on Covid-19 will be part of the meeting and will advise the government, Barry Schoub, the head of the group, said in an interview. The South African Health Regulatory Products Authority and the scientists running a trial of J&J’s vaccine will be part of the meeting, according to Yuven Gounden, a spokesman for the regulator.

The J&J shot is a key element to South Africa’s vaccination plan, and has already been used to inoculate health workers as part of the trial with no reported adverse effects. The version is to be manufactured in the country by drugmaker Aspen Pharmacare Holdings Ltd., while its single-dose nature makes it easier to distribute than double-shot alternatives such as the version made by Pfizer Inc. and BioNTech SE.

J&J said it’s delaying the roll out of its Covid-19 vaccine in Europe after the US decision to suspend the program, which the Food & Drug Administration said is likely to last just a matter of days.

“We are in discussions about how should proceed in South Africa,” Glenda Gray, co-chair of the J&J study, said by text message.

Business Day newspaper reported the talks earlier.

I have noticed last year November some reports mentioning that COVID can cause blood clotting???

Strange how all the vaccines have the same “problem”??

I think the very rare blood clots were caused by COVID not the vaccines.

Think about it.

“Quarter of Covid deaths not caused by virus, new figures show: Almost a quarter of registered Covid deaths are people who are not dying from the disease. This means that, while the person who died will have tested positive for Covid, that was not the primary cause of their death recorded on the death certificate. Daily death figures by “date of death” reveal that Britain has had no more than 28 deaths a day since the beginning of April, even though the government-announced deaths have been as high as 60.”… and actually this percentage is even higher than that, and this means without any doubt that the related statistics that people are looking at are FALSE.

Where are you getting this information from?

So out of 100’s of millions of doses already given, a handful may or may not cause blood clots. So the answer is to suspend vaccinations and waste more time, allow thousands more to get infected daily and lead to thousands more deaths, more economic damage, allow more time for the virus to mutate etc. Makes zero sense. Even time proven vaccines for flu, measles, polio etc have a percentage of people that react badly or even cause death. This whole Covid thing from lockdowns to vaccinations is totally overhyped and mismanaged.

I don’t think any government was prepared for a full-blown pandemic. We haven’t seen one like this for such a long time. Definitely not overhyped, lockdowns and vaccinations are an absolute must to reduce transmission and eradicate the virus where possible.

This specific case may be an over-reaction as the number of people who developed clots is infinitesimal out of all those who have been vaccinated.

At least SA have been more proactive in curbing the spread than the US for example. Who until very recently had horrifically high transmission rates.

Maybe we should suspend Parliament, there are more clots there than in our bloodstreams.

While I 100% support vaccines, on this occasion I refuse point blank to take the COVID vaccine. Why? 1.) because of segregation it will create. Until every person in SA has access to the vaccine I will not. 2.) because of the potential vaccine passport which reminds me of the “dompas” from the apartheid days. 3.) because it symbolises compliance with the state, something that is just stupid to to in SA.

I am sorry, this is just a not so clever comment. I normally don’t degrade myself to this level, but I just cannot help – I want to use words to describe my utter disappointment in your view, but hey, to each his own. I will take up my spot then in front of you! Go Science!

@Lord Beerus. By all means please go ahead. You can also have my dompas

I think if one digs, the 1 in million on this is probably better odds on complications than The Pill.

If you have half a chance to get vaccinated, grab it with all six hands

End of comments.
