South Africa approved Pfizer’s vaccine for use for children over the age of 12, a boost to the country’s immunisation programme.

The move follows a review of updated safety and efficacy information and doesn’t translate into a procurement decision, the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority said Sunday. Regulators approved the vaccine developed by Pfizer and BioNTech SE for local use in adults in March.

Africa’s most developed country has been the hardest hit by the pandemic, reporting the the highest number of infections. Around 12% of the nation has been fully vaccinated, with the country of about 60 million people now bracing for a fourth wave of infections to hit in early December.

The approval comes after Sinovac Biotech said a Covid-19 vaccine trial in infants, children and adolescents would take place in South Africa as part of a global study.

I got my vaccine. But my sympathy for anyone not wanting to get one is growing…

Why are we going to vaccinate kids? Can anyone explain to me?
The hospitalisation / death rate for young people is extremely low.

There is also good evidence that asymptomatic spread is not a thing.

The resistance to anything coming from “the experts” is growing, and I understand why.

Because some of our children need it. Mine has asthma. She’s 15 and is absolutely beside herself with fear of Covid. She WANTS the vaccine. Both myself and my husband are now fully vaccinated. Obviously, it is up to you and your child’s circumstances whether you want to vaccinate or not.

I am all for freedom. And if your kid requires it, then you should of course have the option to get it.
But the trend that I am seeing is not one of freedom of choice.
That concerns me a great deal.

End of comments.
