South Africa’s ex-leader Jacob Zuma on Friday asked the country’s top court to annul his 15-month jail sentence for failing to appear at a corruption inquiry, saying it was excessive, unjust and might kill him if he catches Covid-19 in prison.

The constitutional court sentenced Zuma to 15 months in jail on Tuesday for failing to appear at the corruption inquiry led by Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo in February.

He was given five days to appear before police, but it was unclear whether he will go willingly. His supporters have gathered in his home town of Nkandla to resist his arrest.

In an affidavit submitted on Friday, Zuma said going to jail would put him at great risk.

“I am a 79-year-old man who suffers from a medical condition that constant and intense therapy,” he said, not elaborating.

“My state of health (is among) many reasons I should not be imprisoned … in the context of the a deadly pandemic (in) which people in my circumstances are … at the highest risk of death,” he said.

Since being ousted by his successor, Cyril Ramaphosa, in 2018, Zuma has faced several legal manoeuvres aimed at bringing him to justice on allegations of grand corruption during and before his time as president.

These include Zondo’s inquiry and a separate court case relating to a $2 billion arms deal in 1999, when Zuma was deputy president.

Zuma also called the sentence a “political statement of exemplary punishment”. He has maintained all along that he is the victim of a political witch hunt, and that Zondo is biased against him.

The Zondo Commission is examining allegations of high-level graft involving three Indian-born businessmen, the brothers Atul, Ajay and Rajesh Gupta, during Zuma’s period in power from 2009 to 2018. Allegations against Zuma include that he allowed the Gupta brothers to plunder state resources and influence policy. He and all three Gupta brothers have denied any wrongdoing.

“The constitutional court must reconsider its orders that completely strip me of so many of my guaranteed constitutional rights,” he said.

What a coward.

Yaa! I thought he is not scared??

It clear that JZ considers the court to be an inconvenience, a barricade to his ambitions that needs to be removed by any means. Lie, cheat, plead, frustrate, ignore, etc. Its all just a nod and wink to the sidelines to say this isn’t real, just want needs to be done to get out of trouble.

The judge should say their are some delays to consider his application.*insert excuse JZ and his legal team have used before*. It will take about 15 months.

“Gunshots reverberate in Eshowe & Nkandla as Zuma’s supporters breach…”

Reverberate for the Nkandla invertebrate.

Any and every criminal feels that his/her sentence is unjust and excessive. Furthermore everyone in prison may perhaps be exposed to COVID-19 (and also everyone in a supermarket, office, butchery…). His reasoning seems to match his IQ quite closely. His ability to follow simple legal advice is obviously also severely compromised.

Zuma trampled on the democratic rights of ordinary citizens when he allowed his criminal political party to plunder the shared assets of the nation. He deserves the Chinese solution. He has no moral authority to call on his constitutional rights from the Constitutional Court. We have had enough of this man and his plundering cronies. He has been poisoning the general discourse for too long. This man, and everyone who associates with him, is an insult to all law-abiding citizens.

He,he,he,Ha…Pft.. Remember how he laughed in Parliament? John Gotti was a better MAN.

Now he is full of excuses. If he had used his brain instead of trying to be a hero he would not be facing jail time.

Off to jail with you buddy. You reaped what you sowed. Enjoy.

He did use his brain. All of it.

Did not take long at all…..

What s pathetic excuse for a human being

But did he not say himself: I rather go to jail then appear before that commission??
And now begging on his knees to avoid this?
What a spineless creature.

How did this rubbish become our president and remain so for 9 years? What an embarrassment, to all you morons still supporting him at Nkandla just look at how pathetic he actually is. I can’t wait for Sunday to see him in cuffs and behind bars.

Nou kan zondo ook maar toemaak.

They might let him off. Rather, they should give him one more chance to go back to zondo.

If he doesn’t has to be jail

He has had enough chances. He can show he deserves his parole by doing it via Zoom from jail.

Yellow Belly. Hahaaaa!!!

He will however be the one to show the whole world SA has a FAKE Justice system.

If bluster does not help – try to grovelling .

“Victory for the Rule of Law” did’nt last very long. What happened to no appeal? The SA flag should have a banana on it. Its Rule of Tribalism.

Indeed, sadly I think Mr Zuma is untouchable, deep down we all know it but we either ignore it or continue to live in hope.

He complains to CC that he is scared he might contract covid in jail???

Yesterday he was not scared to contract covid as he went right into a crowd with no physical distancing and no mask. The whole lot of them did not wear masks!!! SO HOW IS THIS GUY SCARED?? Lying to Concourt?? Is there no penalty for that???

In addition they all broke the law!! Nobody arrested?? There is ample evidence??

Agree…. the Common thief gets years in Jail.

Something is wrong.

I think its time to not pay taxes once Zuma sets the Precedent… I want to see SARS arrest me.

“Says sentence is excessive, unjust and might kill him” – serves you right, you basically killed our economy, you hypocrite! Or do you want medical parole to join a critical-ill Shabir at Bryanston Golf Course?
